my 26 year old son just moved to austin tx and wants to kick-start his new life here by meeting some people that are not co-workers. 6'th st however, has a reputation for being a bit of a tourist trap. East of I-35, I am told, can be a bad place to get lost or drive aimlessly through. his place of residence is in Manchaca actually on the outskirts of South Austin and is right next to Buda. He plays music and does kareoki and shoots pool and would really enjoy getting around people in his age group, so if you could take that into consideration when answering, it would be greatly appreciated.

6th street is for college kids.

4th street is for 20 & 30 somethings- Lavaca Street, Whiskey bar.... 219 tends to be for 30 somethings +.

Living South DK Sushi bar is fun on Monday nights for karaoke..

There used to be a pool hall close to Manchaca - Stardust.

There's a couple bars close to Oakhill - Detour & Boomerz...Detour is 20something, Boomerz is a dive.

He might try:

special interest groups that share some of his interests

church groups for singles

other singles organizations

some type of volunteer organizations

He also might visit, as a single, any kareoki bar and get up and sing! If he is good people will introduce themselves. He could get to be a regular there and get acquainted with others who share his interests and talents. You can usually pick up a game in pool halls, and although I am not aware of where they are at present I am sure there are some nice ones.

I am familiar with Manchaca (lived near William Cannon and Manchaca Blvd for years) and one of my sons lives in Buda. He is in process of moving today but I will ask him this question (he is 35) and knows lots about the music scene in Austin. Then I will resubmit my answer.

I hope your son finds lots of new friends and enjoys living in Austin. It is a wonderful place to live.

He can ride the bus to the middle of Austin to the River Front where they have live Music and Concerts.
