hi in my birth certificate the big one my last name is correct, but when i went to get out the small certificate my last name is missing a letter i went were i got the small certificate but they said "that's how they have it in austin tx". So i need to feel out some papers with a notary and it takes like 2 months to make the changes, and i cant get my texas id nor a driver license and i really need it. So i wanted to know if i can go all the way to austin tx were they make the changes. and if i can do it by myself with a notary or my parents need to be there? my dads license is suspended and they ask for a license not expired in the notary.

I don't know what you mean by the "big" and "small" birth certificates. If your birth certificate is correct, all you need to do is request a certified copy of the certificate, and that is all you should need.

If you do need to correct the certificate:

You must have an older relative complete and sign a VS170 Application to Amend Certificate of Birth (pdf 58K) or a VS172 Application to Amend Certificate of Death (pdf 45K) in front of a notary public. If you are a minor, both of your parents must sign the form before a notary public to show they are in agreement to the change or correction.

Some changes or corrections require a supporting document to prove that an error has been made. See page two of the application for a list of corrections that can be made and whether the correction requires documentation. A suggested list of supporting documents is also printed on page two of the application.

There is a fee of $15 to file the amendment (correction) and an additional fee of $22 for a certified copy of the birth certificate once it is corrected. Send the completed application, along with the required documentation (if any) and the correct fee, to our office at:

Texas Vital Statistics

Department of State Health Services

P.O. Box 12040

Austin, TX 78711-2040

A specialist trained in parentage issues will review your application. However, we cannot file the new application until all aspects of your application have been reviewed. If filing is not possible, Texas Vital Statistics will send you a letter explaining the situation.

In other words, I doubt you can go to Austin and get this done any more quickly. Sorry.

Let's think about this, calmly and rationally. Obama's family already took a vacation to Hawaii earlier this year, after he won the democratic nomination. If he wanted to "fix" his certificate or destroy some evidence, wouldn't he have done it then? When he was staying in Hawaii for a longer period of time? Obama also needed his birth certificate for clearance at several times in his life already - such as his driver's license and to apply for senator. Again, if he needed to "fix" or change his birth certificate he would have already done so. And getting a birth certificate "fixed" is not as easy as it sounds. You have to have aged paper to match your age and there are other variables like that to take into consideration. When Obama's birth certificate is made available (which it probably will be - remember, he didn't have any problem sharing his tax information with the public), experts will be able to tell when it was made and check it's authenticity to put this subject to rest.
